‍Our Take:

Loox is a generally affordable reviews platform, but we think it gets lost in the middle. We recommend Judge.me for new stores as it has a free plan and is a bit easier to install, and we recommend Okendo for Medium and Enterprise size companies as it has more features (e.g., customization ability of the review widget UX) and integrations. Loox isn’t a bad option, but we generally pick its alternatives in most cases.

Best for: Small ($0-$10M annual revenue), Medium ($10-50M) size companies.

Loox Overview:

Loox was founded by Yoni Elbaz and Moran Benisty who met in 2012 while working at the innovation center for US conglomerate Sears in Israel. They were both interested in ecommerce and online communities. In 2015, they noticed small merchants moving from Amazon/eBay to Shopify and needing tools to drive traffic, as well as the web becoming more visual. They started Loox as a B2C model focused on photo reviews, hoping to use user-generated content to attract and convert buyers. However, their revenue assumptions were proven wrong - customer acquisition and conversion rates were lower and order values smaller than expected. Raising more funds to scale would mean less focus on customers. So they pivoted to a B2B model focused solely on providing photo reviews for Shopify merchants. As a bootstrapped company, they were very frugal - they didn't pay themselves for 15 months and used services like DigitalOcean to save on hosting costs. They started with just the two of them doing everything until they hired their first employee for customer support in 2017. They acquired customers cheaply through the Shopify App Store, partnerships, and having their branding/widget on merchants' sites. Despite hiring and growth challenges, their focus on Shopify, frugality, and customer feedback enabled them to reach profitability and continue bootstrapping.
