Triple Whale is one of the hottest eCommerce softwares to launch in the last 5 years. They paired a great product with an incredible marketing strategy and their growth has been off the charts. However, Triple Whale isn’t right for everyone. It’s relatively expensive and it lacks features that competitors offer, so we’ve put together a list of our top Triple Whale alternatives.

What is Triple Whale?

Triple Whale started in 2021 as a dashboard for eCommerce founders. The idea for the dashboard was to put all the important information that a DTC founder would need (e.g., Shopify sales data, Facebook performance data etc.) into a simple easy to read dashboard. When Apple launched privacy changes with their iOS 14 rollout, Triple Whale added a first-party pixel to help eCommerce brands with attribution which was made more challenging by Apple’s privacy changes. The dashboard and the attribution pixel are still at the core of what Triple Whale does today, but they have also added additional functionality like influencer & affiliate tracking, creative performance monitoring, and lifetime value calculations. Their most recent product feature announcement was the AI tool Moby which gives companies the ability to chat with their data. Is Triple Whale worth it? We think their free dashboard is a no-brainer for all Shopify brands. For their paid offering, we think it’s a great tool, but only for companies who are doing over $10M in revenue per year. Its first-party pixel is a good check against in platform metrics, its LTV analysis is great (although you can also get a point solution like Lifetimely for that), and it can do cohort analysis and identify bundle opportunities.

But Triple Whale isn’t right for all brands. Its paid product isn’t cheap and it lacks features some competitors offer. Below are our picks for the best alternatives to Triple Whale.

Our Top Triple Whale Alternatives:

1. ThoughtMetric

Most of the features of Triple Whale at 25-30% cheaper price

One of the top complaints about Triple Whale is its pricing. While we love the free dashboard they offer in order to use their Multi Touch Attribution (MTA) offering you will have to upgrade to one of their paid plans. These paid plans aren’t cheap.

Enter ThoughtMetric. It offers most of the features of Triple Whale at a price point that’s 25-30% cheaper than Triple Whale. Thought Metric offers server side tracking and Multi Touch Attribution that is similar to Triple Whale’s offering. While Triple Whale is only available for Shopify stores, ThoughtMetric will work for Shopify stores in addition to any other eCommerce platform you might be using (e.g., WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento etc.) This is great for non Shopify brands. Like Triple Whale, they also offer a simple post purchase survey “How did you hear about us?” to help triangulate your attribution tracking. In addition they offer detailed customer journey visualizations.

Where does ThoughtMetric trail Triple Whale? They’re dashboards aren’t quit as slick as Triple Whales, and they don’t yet offer a creative analysis section (what Triple Whale calls their Creative Cockpit).

ThoughtMetric is our pick for those looking to save money vs Triple Whale or those who are looking for a solution that will work on non-Shopify stores.

2. Northbeam

Our pick for Enterprise ($40M+) brands

Northbeam is the competitor that most often comes up in conversations about Triple Whale alternatives. We’ve done a full breakdown on Triple Whale vs Northbeam that we recommend you read, but we’ll summarize here. We think Northbeam is a great tool, but it only makes sense for larger ($40M+) brands. Northbeam is priced based on pageviews, whereas Triple Whale is priced based on tracked revenue. In certain cases (e.g., high AOV products) where pageviews are low but revenues are high, Northbeam will be cheaper than Triple Whale. However, in our experience Northbeam will typically be more expensive than Triple Whale. Triple Whale’s core attribution methodology will closely mimic the in-platform numbers, whereas Northbeam’s will not. This will require your team to get comfortable with Northbeam’s attribution methodology. We typically see small teams / owner operators benefiting more from Triple Whale’s methodology (less learning curve) and larger teams with dedicated media buyers getting more benefit from Northbeam. Northbeam is also available on all eCommerce platforms (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, etc.), whereas Triple Whale is only available on Shopify. Northbeam also takes the added step of being installed in your website's DNS records, so some argue that this leads to more accurate tracking compared to Triple Whale.

Overall, we recommend Northbeam for larger eCommerce brands that are doing over $40M in annual sales.

3. Hyros

Best for Info products

Hyros was founded by Alex Becker in May of 2019. We could write a whole guide just on Alex. He’s super charismatic (check out his YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram) and interested in a wide variety of topics like self-optimization, crypto, and Jiu Jitsu to name a few. Love him or hate him one thing is clear - he's a great salesman. Prior to founding Hyros, Alex sold a variety of courses including one on SEO (Source Wave University - here's a 2014 throwback video of him promoting it), paid advertising (Blackfile), and drop shipping (H-Com). He struggled to track the effectiveness of his ad spend on these courses and also realized SaaS was a more scalable business model than online courses, and so he launched Hyros. On the back of his social presence and marketing chops he grew Hyros to a point where it was eventually sold to a SPAC for $110M in December of 2022. Today, they have over 3,000 customers who spend over $3.5B on paid ads.

We generally think there are better alternatives to Hyros with a better product and more straightforward pricing and sales motion. However, we think Hyros is a good alternative if you are selling an info product. They have the who’s who of clients selling info products including Tony Robbins, Grant Cardone, and Russel Brunson. The key benefit with Hyros for info products is their call tracking features. For info products that rely on sales calls as a crucial step in the funnel, Hyros has tools to help you track the performance of these calls. With this you can better understand which sales channels lead to the most qualified leads based on your sales call data. This feature isn’t available with the more eCommerce focused tools and is why we think Hyros could be a good option for info products that rely on sales calls.

4. Rockerbox

Another solid Enterprise option

Rockerbox was founded by Ron Jacobson and Rick O’Toole. Before founding Rockerbox, Jacobson led the Real Time Platform product team at AppNexus. We view Rockerbox as similar to Northbeam and it focuses on Enterprise size brands. Similar to Triple Whale they offer a free plan, but we don’t think the free plan is as user friendly as Triple Whale’s free Founders dashboard. A key differentiator for Rockerbox is their Media Mix Modeling (MMM) capability. Their approach takes your historical data and small changes in marketing spend that is run through their proprietary algorithms in order to get a Media Mix Model. This would be an alternative to expensive platforms that are solely focused on MMM (e.g., Measured).

5. Cometly

For pulling and pushing data back to platforms

Cometly is an interesting alternative to Triple Whale. It supports eCommerce companies, but unlike Triple Whale, it isn’t solely focused on eCommerce. They support any platform you might be using (e.g., Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, ClickFunnels, Funnelish etc.) In addition to eCommerce companies they support software businesses, lead gen businesses, info products and more. They currently track most paid channels (Meta, Google, TikTok, and Linkedin) but don’t track email or SMS. Where Cometly differentiates is in sending data back to your paid ad platforms. We think of Cometly’s offering as a hybrid between Triple Whale and Elevar. Cometly does attribution tracking, but they also send data back to the add platforms to improve in platform performance. The data Cometly sends back will improve the Conversion API (CAPI) performance.
